Amnesty International report on Mozambique’s protests throws light on trigger-happy police

A new report by the human rights organisation supports the view that Mozambican police were quick to resort to lethal force

Mozambican security forces committed numerous human rights violations during the post-election protests that saw hundreds of civilians shot dead by police, the human rights organisation Amnesty International said in a report published last week. The report called for an independent investigation to hold those responsible to account.

Amnesty said the government responded to largely peaceful demonstrations with unlawful use of lethal force such as shooting into crowds, arbitrary arrests, and suppression of free expression, including internet blackouts and intimidation of journalists.
