Analysis: Death of Mozambique’s ‘Father of Democracy’ could usher in new democratic era


The passing this week of the undisputed leader of Mozambique’s political opposition for almost four decades leaves the country’s precarious political settlement on a knife-edge, with no obvious successor waiting in the wings. However, if Renamo takes the opportunity to reinvent itself and potentially reintegrate opposition figures forced out of Renamo by Dhlakama, it could usher in a new era for Mozambique’s infant democracy.
