On 5 October, 2017, a new political actor appeared on the Mozambican stage when some thirty armed men occupied the town of Mocímboa da Praia, killing two policemen in a day-long gun battle. Reports soon emerged that the men were members of an Islamist insurgency. Since the initial Mocímboa raid, insurgency has gone on to sow terror throughout northern Mozambique, carrying out shocking attacks and driving many from their homes.
