Civilians beheaded in Metuge attack

Up to five people were beheaded by insurgents in the village of Muissi in the Metuge district of Cabo Delgado province on Saturday

Up to five people were beheaded by insurgents in the village of Muissi in the Metuge district of Cabo Delgado province on Saturday, sparking panic among the surrounding communities.

Insurgents arrived in Muissi in the afternoon and murdered an unsuspecting group of four men and a woman working in the fields, according to a local source. Another man was also shot and taken for treatment at the Metuge health centre, where he is believed to be recovering.

As news of the attack spread, much of the population panicked, with many evacuating to Metuge district headquarters 15km south, or to the provincial capital of Pemba, a security consultant told Zitamar.

This is the second attack in Metuge in a week, as Carta de Moçambique reported that three people were beheaded on Monday 19 September near Pulo village, 30km from Metuge town. A local source claimed that Metuge received fleeing families from Pulo following the attack.
