Cost-cutting by Indian-owned Vulcan Minerals has led to a spate of serious accidents at its coal mine in Moatize

Good evening. A number of workers at the Moatize coal mine now run by Vulcan Minerals, a subsidiary of India's Jindal Steel and Power Limited, are lucky to be alive after a series of serious accidents over the last six weeks, as we exclusively report today.

Jindal bought the mine from Brazilian mining giant Vale in 2022 in a cut-price deal, and has proceeded to cut costs where it can at the mine. One area where it has felt the need to cut back is in providing transport for workers.
