Renamo is no longer an armed movement, or a political party with an armed wing; it is simply a political party. History will record this as the crowning achievement of Filipe Nyusi’s two terms as president of Mozambique. And it is a significant moment in the development of Mozambican democracy.

The up-coming elections — local this year, national next year — will be the first that Renamo contests without an armed wing. It therefore no longer has the option to threaten “chaos”, or to make the country “ungovernable”, as it has done in the past, in response to elections which it viewed — often with good reason — as having been rigged.
