Signs of manipulation of the vote count point to an alliance between Mozambique’s two main parties to subvert democracy again

Good afternoon. Journalists and political commentators sometimes refer to “Frenamo”, the idea that there is a covert alliance between ruling party Frelimo and opposition party Renamo when the interests of the two coincide. But is there any evidence for that? Results emerging from last week’s elections offer clues that Frelimo may be helping Renamo to avoid humiliation at the hands of Venâncio Mondlane and his Podemos party.

As we noted last week, early indications from the polling stations were that Renamo’s vote in both the presidential and parliamentary elections had collapsed and that Podemos had taken votes from it, as well as from Frelimo. That picture has not changed, but what has emerged is a discrepancy between the raw numbers seen on results sheets at individual voting tables, and the district-level results reported at the weekend.
