“Frenamo” triumphs over democracy

Whatever the legal arguments, the exclusion of the Democratic Alliance Coalition from elections was politically motivated

Good afternoon. The Mozambican media have started to resurrect the term “Frenamo” to mean an alliance of ruling party Frelimo and main opposition party Renamo. This alliance has been brought back because of the presence of a common enemy, in the form of ex-member of parliament and former Renamo member Venâncio Mondlane. It was “Frenamo”, according to this week’s issue of weekly newspaper Savana, which was responsible for the decision of the Constitutional Council, the court with the final say on election matters, to ban Mondlane’s Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) from running in the October elections. Mondlane will still be able to run as a presidential candidate, although officially he will not be the CAD candidate any more. But he can no longer run for parliament under the CAD flag, which means that if he fails to be elected president, he will not hold any political office.
