Hopes for cotton harvest wither

This year’s crop is well below forecasts, and the collapse of the biggest buyer is largely to blame

Good afternoon. The government went into the current cotton growing campaign last year with high hopes of boosting production by over 20%, from about 23,500 tons in 2022-23 to 30,000 tonnes in the year just ending. Those hopes have been dashed. As the latest figures show, production this year is estimated to be around 24,000, which would be an increase of just 2% on last year.
