Insurgents attack Muidumbe villages as IS claims Tanzania incursion

Insurgents have attacked and burned villages in the Cabo Delgado district of Muidumbe this morning, and the Islamic State has apparently claimed responsibility for attacks in Tanzania

Insurgents attacked and burned villages in the Cabo Delgado district of Muidumbe this morning, according to multiple reports — and the Islamic State has apparently claimed responsibility for at least one attack across the border in Tanzania.

The village of Namacanda, the headquarters of Muidumbe district and home to the local government, was one of those attacked on Saturday morning, along with Nchinga. A source in the village of Muatide told Zitamar it appeared there were insurgents in that village too.

Pinnacle News said Nchinga was attacked, and Miteda, in the west of Muidumbe district, close to the border with the district of Mueda. A source in Muambula, one of the district’s most populous villages, told Zitamar by phone that insurgents had also entered that village.

Pinnacle’s report also said there had been another attack on Pundanhar this morning, close to the Rovuma River that forms Mozambique’s border with Tanzania.

Yesterday, the Islamic State claimed affiliated insurgents had attacked three villages on the Tanzanian side of the river, before returning to Mozambique. Twitter users in Tanzania had reported at least one attack near Michenjele, in Tandahimba, across the river from Nangade district in Mozambique.

On the night of Friday, 30 October, “rockets” were fired from the Tanzanian side of the river into Nangade district, injuring some inhabitants of a village in Nangade, according to a source in Nangade.
