Insurgents attacked a village on the Tanzanian side of the Rovuma river on the night of 20-21 October, taking a number of hostages who were later freed after a military operation launched from a nearby base.

The village attacked is called Kilimahewa, located between the towns of Michenjele and Mihambwe in Tandahimba district, across the Rovuma river from Nangade in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.

The attackers burned down a cashew nut warehouse and took a number of hostages. A local source said the hostages were all released following a military operation on 21 October launched from a military camp near Mihabwe.

A source in Nangade said that Mozambican refugees now wishing to return to Nangade from Tanzania have found themselves stranded, unable to cross the Rovuma River due to a heavy military presence along the border.
