A prisoner who escaped from Mueda’s district prison, Cadeia Distrital de Mueda in Cabo Delgado province on Saturday afternoon was recaptured by local militia within 30 minutes.
The inmate was planting maize in the jail’s farm with one unarmed guard at approximately 3.30pm, said Zitamar’s source, explaining that the prisoner made his escape when the prison officer returned inside to fetch some more prisoners to work in the field.
The detainee stripped off his orange uniform under which he was wearing shorts and a shirt.
He then jumped over the wall and ran south in the direction of the hospital.
The guard called for backup as soon as he realised the prisoner was gone.
Reinforcements started chasing and at least six shots were fired.
The shooting caused a prompt response from Mueda’s militia members that were in the vicinity. They suspected insurgents had entered the village.
It took no more than 30 minutes for the local forces to catch the fugitive.
The forces can be seen moving outside the prison wall and gates in this video filmed by Zitamar’s source after the prisoner had been apprehended.
The prison is located at the district’s headquarters.
