Mondlane is down, but not out

The presidential candidate is likely to survive his next period in the political wilderness

Good afternoon. This week brings news of more demonstrations called by Venâncio Mondlane, arguably the most serious challenger to ruling party Frelimo in the presidential election (see below). The demonstrations are to protest the exclusion of his Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) from taking part in the parliamentary and provincial elections also taking place in October. They are expected to be a peaceful affair: no marching or chanting, just people holding up hands painted black and probably lighting candles.
