Good afternoon. The deal announced between opposition presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and the minor political party Podemos (see below) is a victory for them, and a defeat for the election authorities, who did their best to stop Mondlane having an impact on the election.

Readers may recall that last month, the National Elections Commission banned the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) from standing candidates in October’s provincial and parliamentary elections, a decision that was upheld by the Constitutional Council, the court with the final say on election matters. The decision is widely believed to have been taken because CAD was supporting Mondlane for president, and the appeal of a Mondlane-backed CAD was seen as too much of a threat to ruling party Frelimo and main opposition party Renamo.
