Montepuez Ruby Mining defends military presence at ruby mine, after informal miner shot

MRM said that insurgents and informal miners who invaded its ruby mining site were sometimes “one and the same”

Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) has defended the presence of members of the Mozambican armed forces at its ruby mine in Cabo Delgado’s Montepuez district, after troops shot and injured an informal miner two weeks ago.

The 29-year-old was shot in the leg on 18 March when, according to an MRM statement, a “large group of illegal miners” trespassed onto the site. The Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM) said that the group had “aggressively advanced” towards their patrol, according to MRM. The wounded man was treated at MRM’s clinic before being taken to hospital.
