Good afternoon. The election campaign is in its final fortnight, and evidence continues to come in about how the playing field is tilted in favour of ruling party Frelimo. Venâncio Mondlane, the leading opposition presidential candidate, says that he has filed a criminal complaint about violations of electoral law committed by ruling party Frelimo and its presidential candidate Daniel Chapo (see below).

Although the full details of the complaint have not been released, some of it evidently refers specifically to Chapo’s use of the presidential plane. Earlier this year, Chapo used the plane when he accompanied President Filipe Nyusi on a tour of the country, something that is hardly required by Chapo’s day job as governor of Inhambane province. Other offences complained of are the use of state vehicles for Frelimo campaigning, a time-honoured practice.
