Good evening. The huge agriculture potential of Niassa province, with four million hectares of available arable land, is well known. This is why, as happens from time to time, the local business association put on an agriculture investment forum, attracting potential foreign investors and leading politicians like Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane, and industry and commerce minister Silvino Moreno.
According to Inocêncio Sotomane, one of the event’s organisers, there were 20 projects presented, valued at $42m for the production of soy, macadamia, legumes and cattle.
From the Zitamar Live Blog:
Maleiane added the potential of wheat, maize and agro-industry transformation, while visiting the site of a poultry feed factory near Lichinga. The plant will go operational next January and will produce 270 tonnes of feed per month, providing a market for maize and soy production.
It was announced at the forum that investors from Indonesia, Kenya and Tanzania have shown interest in the projects. In the past, farmers from South Africa and timber industries from Scandinavia have tried to invest and often failed.
