If President Nyusi’s decision to visit attend Vladimir Putin’s Africa-Russia summit St Petersburg is somewhat mystifying — and what we have learned about the trip so far does little to provide a justification — there is no such mystery as to why Filipe Nyusi called in at Kigali on the way back.

Nyusi takes every opportunity to visit his counterpart and friend in Rwanda, Paul Kagame; and a fixture for the Mozambican women’s basketball team provided another opportunity.
