On the brink of bloodshed

To prevent further deaths in demonstrations tomorrow, there needs to be genuine negotiation and police restraint

Good afternoon. Five days after the killing of the opposition figures Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, Mozambique's political crisis remains nowhere near a resolution. Nationwide election results are due to be officially announced tomorrow. If, as expected, they simply confirm that ruling party Frelimo has been upheld as the clear victor in the elections, this will deepen the rift between the government on one hand, and presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and the Podemos party on the other.

Hundreds came to pay their respects to the opposition lawyer murdered last Friday.

It has already emerged that a man was killed by police bullets in Maputo on Monday, and there is now a serious risk of more violence from tomorrow. Mondlane has increased pressure on Frelimo and the government, calling for a general strike on Thursday and Friday, and for people to come out and march. He has exhorted the public to flood the streets, defying the ability of the police to control them.
