Good afternoon. Mozambican police have announced the reintroduction of speed and alcohol checkpoints across the country in an effort to curb the rising number of road accidents and deaths. This decision follows a tragic accident on 24 March in Gondola, Manica Province, in which some 23 people lost their lives, as well as other recent fatal incidents in Gaza and Maputo provinces.

This police announcement is not really new; they said in February that they’d reopen all 52 checkpoints in the country in response to increased traffic violations that had left roads largely unregulated. This was a reversal of an earlier decision in October to reduce the number of checkpoints from 52 to 23, citing the need to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion at checkpoints.
