Protests force shutdown of Syrah’s Mozambique graphite mine

Political protests and a dispute over land compensation have combined to force Syrah to cancel production plans at its mine in Balama district

Syrah Resources’ Mozambican subsidiary has evacuated staff and halted production plans at its graphite mine in Balama district, Cabo Delgado province, citing the government’s inability to provide security or to resolve a dispute with discontented locals who have been blocking access to the mine for almost three months.

The Australian company told investors earlier today that the nationwide unrest following October’s contested elections was hindering the ability of local authorities to resolve existing protests at Balama, which have now drawn in demonstrators “conflating unrelated issues and objectives” alongside the original protesters.
