Resettled communities live with broken promises

Hundreds of families forced from their homes by the Maputo-Katembe Bridge have been abandoned by the government. They are not the only ones.

Good afternoon. The Mozambican government continues to mismanage the resettlement of civilians displaced by major infrastructure projects. Such cases have been extensively documented in the provinces of Tete, Nampula and Cabo Delgado, but they are not restricted to remote areas. One of the most blatant cases of bungled resettlement occurs less than 50 km from the centre of the capital.

In 2016, approximately 360 families were resettled from the Malanga neighbourhood of Maputo City to Tenga, in Moamba, to make way for the $1.1 bn Maputo-Katembe Bridge. The construction of the bridge and the resettlement process were the responsibility of the Empresa de Desenvolvimento de Maputo Sul, which was underfunded and finally dissolved by government decree in 2018, shortly after the inauguration of the bridge.
