Tensions mount at the Vulcan mine

💥Insurgents infiltrated Macomia town and burned a car on 8 August, according to the Islamic State newspaper Al Naba. The burning of the vehicle by a guesthouse in the Nanga neighbourhood spread panic through the town but it was not clear who was responsible until the latest issue of Al Naba was published yesterday. The Rwanda Security Forces assumed responsibility for protecting Macomia on 23 July following the withdrawal of the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique.

The Vulcan coal mine has repeatedly made headlines in recent months. Locals’ homes have been destroyed by reckless blasting, residential areas are regularly consumed by hazardous dust clouds, and new working conditions have resulted in a massive spike in accidents, with two workers being killed last month. It’s no wonder that the community feels forced to act.
