The bypassing of Beira

The port of Beira could be southern Africa’s most important export hub, if the obstacles could be overcome

Good afternoon. According to the head of the local business association, the port of Beira is losing half a million tonnes of traffic a year to the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania (see below). The figure cannot be verified, and the man who gave it, Félix Machado, is not an impartial observer: he owns a transport company, Terramar Logística, which transports cargo between Zimbabwe and Beira. But what is clear is that at least some cargo that ought to be being exported from Beira because of its geographical location is going to South African and Tanzanian ports instead.
