Are used clothes a benefit or a cost for ordinary Mozambicans?

Good afternoon. The sale of second-hand clothes is boosting the Mozambican economy and helping to reduce poverty, according to a new report from the consultancy Oxford Economics. The report found that the industry added $10.7m to the country’s GDP and supported at least 20,700 jobs.

Leaving aside whether GDP is the best way to measure economic development in a country where poverty reduction needs to take priority, this report and a similar report published a few months ago were commissioned to suit an agenda. It was produced on behalf of Humana People to People, a federation of social enterprises which makes millions of dollars from selling second-hand clothes.
