Three beheaded in fresh attack in southern Cabo Delgado

At least three civilians were beheaded by insurgents on the banks of the Megaruma river dividing the districts of Ancuabe and Chiure on Wednesday

At least three civilians were beheaded by insurgents on the banks of the Megaruma river dividing the districts of Ancuabe and Chiure on Wednesday, 31 August.

Sources told Zitamar that insurgents moved south on the road from Metoro towards Chiure district headquarters on 31 August. The group reportedly came across two men and a woman working in the fields near the village of Megaruma A, on the Ancuabe side of the river, and beheaded them all.

News of the attack has prompted some civilians in Chiure to flee to the district headquarters, Chiure town, according to one local source. The insurgents were last spotted moving further south along the same road towards Chiure town, marking the first known insurgent incursion into the district in months.

The last confirmed insurgent attack in Chiure took place on 18 June when the village of Marereni was invaded and burned.
