Good afternoon. A survey released this week by More Integrity, the coalition of election observers, reveals no surprises about media coverage of the election campaign (see below). Ruling party Frelimo dominates election coverage in all traditional media, especially print media.

Media coverage of the election is not entirely one-sided, and even state-controlled outlets do give some coverage to opposition parties, though not as much as to Frelimo, as the survey makes clear. On the other hand, supposedly independent media organisations are no better than state media in how they allocate coverage. Former presidents Armando Guebuza and Joaquim Chissano, as well as former first lady Graça Machel, have all joined the Frelimo campaign recently, and they have almost been treated like presidential candidates in their own right alongside Daniel Chapo. Even Chapo’s wife has been deemed worthy of airtime.
