The United States government is set to cut more than $172m worth of aid contracts in Mozambique, including life-saving health and food security projects, according to a memo sent by the administration to the US Congress and seen by Zitamar News.

These cuts amount to 47% of the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) spending in Mozambique and 0.9% of the country’s gross national income, according to analysis by the Centre for Global Development. This puts Mozambique among the countries facing the largest wave of cuts as a proportion of its economic size, as President Donald Trump seeks to effectively close down USAID by merging it with the Department of State.
