Good afternoon. Registration of voters is due to begin next week, ahead of the elections for Mozambique’s president, parliament and provincial governors in October. And even with the elections seven months away, there are already signs that the electoral authorities are working to manipulate the vote in favour of ruling party Frelimo.

The Metuge water treatment plant, which serves the Cabo Delgado provincial capital of Pemba, was not attacked yesterday, the northern water system administrator AdRN has clarified, in a statement responding to rumours on social media. AdRN also made clear that the water had not been poisoned by insurgents, as suggested in some rumours. Insurgents attacked the village of Pulo, around 8km from the water treatment plant, yesterday. The plant itself is protected by Mozambican armed forces and police, and by the Rwandan military, AdRN said. The AdRN statement is attached.

A fishing boat capsized yesterday at Ponta Malongane, off the coast of southern Maputo province, with so far only two confirmed survivors of 12 people on board. According to a statement issued yesterday by the state institute for the sea, Inamar, one person was confirmed dead and nine missing. Inamar said the Roberto was fishing illegally when it started to take on water, leading some of the crew to panic, which ultimately led to the boat capsizing. The Inamar statement is attached.
