A victory for all Mozambicans

Like independence, and the Rome peace accord in 1992, the completion of DDR is a victory for the country, not just Frelimo

Frelimo party members march in Inhambane on 17 June to celebrate the closure of the last Renamo base

Good afternoon. Independence day is almost upon us. Mozambique will mark 48 years since independence this coming Sunday, 25 June (the following day, Monday 26th, will be a public holiday, which this newsletter will observe).

And this year Mozambicans have double the reason to celebrate, given the completion of the disarmament and demobilisation of Renamo last week. The government is planning a celebratory event for this Friday which it has invited global media (not Zitamar, naturally) to cover — even offering to pay their expenses.
