In the last week, Islamic State-backed insurgents have intensified their blockade of the N380 highway in Cabo Delgado province, extorting travellers and taking hostages for ransom, including two members of Mozambique’s Armed Defence Forces (FADM).
Mozambique’s Ministry of National Defence reported on Thursday that insurgents had kidnapped two FADM members, Second Lieutenant Zacarias João Soares and soldier Gildo António de Oliveiras, on the N380 between the villages of Quinto Congresso and Nova Zambézia in Macomia district.
