Islamic State social media claimed on Friday that its fighters in Mozambique had attacked a patrol of government security forces in Macomia, killing two soldiers and injuring several more.
The statement, which appeared on IS social media channels on Friday, said the security forces were ambushed “near the village of Kent in the Macomia region of Cabo Delgado”, with automatic weapons and that weapons and ammunition were seized. It did not say when the attack took place.
IS has previously referred to the village of ‘Kent’, meaning Quinto Congresso, a village in northern Macomia. Local sources said a group from the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) was attacked around Nova Zambézia on Wednesday, 8 June. Nova Zambézia is approximately 6km from Quinto Congresso.
Quinto Congresso lies just over 20km north of Macomia district headquarters. IS also claimed to have attacked the village of Chai, also in the north of Macomia district, on 7 June but this has not been corroborated by other sources.
On June 10, IS released a second statement claiming responsibility for burning 20 houses and killing two civilians in an unspecified location in Cabo Delgado earlier that day.
