Teachers in Cabo Delgado: a lesson in realism

Many teachers who have fled the insurgency cannot be expected to return until security and living conditions improve

Good afternoon. The offensive against insurgents in Cabo Delgado province’s Macomia district is not over, and yet the authorities have already started encouraging local teachers who fled Macomia and Quissanga districts to return home and go back to work, judging by their comments (see below).

Telling people who escaped the insurgency that they can and should go home is a constant message from the government, which throughout the ups and downs of its war against the insurgents has constantly been trying to create the impression that life in Cabo Delgado is “back to normal” and that the insurgent threat is either non-existent or is under control.
