Crunch weekend ahead for Nyusi succession

Whoever the president nominates at the Political Commission next week will become the front-runner in the race to succeed him

Frelimo’s Political Commission (Comissão Política, or CP) is expected to meet as soon as Monday to decide on its shortlist of candidates to be the next president of Mozambique — a shortlist which will de facto be drawn up by the current president of both Mozambique and Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi.

Influential newspaper Savana today leads with the race to succeed Nyusi, featuring top candidates Jose Pacheco and Jaime Basilio Monteiro on its front page, above smaller pictures of more minor candidates: Alberto Vaquina, Luisa Diogo, Aires Ali (all three former Prime Ministers), the head of the tax authority Amelia Muendane, and a certain Celso Correia.
